When Food Talk Hurts: What Our Words Teach Our Kids

What are everyday food comments teaching our kids - and how can we break the cycle?

“I was so bad today, I ate dessert.”

“I’ll be good tomorrow and just have a salad.”

“Cheat day!”

“I need to burn all this off later.”

“I gave in and had pizza.”

“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.”

🍽️ What are they learning from this language?

– Food is something you have to earn — or feel guilty about.
– Exercise is a punishment for eating.
– Enjoying food means you’re failing.
– Being “in control” and staying thin are what gives you worth.

❤️ What if we spoke with more kindness — to ourselves and around others?

🍎 Food is nourishment and joy.
💪 Movement can be a celebration, not a consequence.
👦🏽 Kids are learning how to treat their bodies by watching how we treat ours.

Let’s be the generation that heals, so the next one doesn’t have to.

It doesn’t mean we’ll always get it right — it just means we’re paying attention.
We’re noticing the words.
And we’re choosing new ones.
